Thanks to the helpful folks on this forum I now know what model the Painted over Miller machine is that I recently acquired.

See MILLER MYSTERY MACHINE thread in this forum.

Now I am hoping that one of you guys out there that is a Miller BIG 40 expert can tell me if there are any identification codes or numbers stamped or taged anywhere on this machine that will help zero in on the exact model as there were a lot of those made over the years and they probably made changes through out the series. I need to acquire a complete set of schematic diagrams as well as mechanical specs and drawings. Before I do any serious work beyond getting the engine started I need to determine if this thing is worth fixing. If there are serious problems in the generator such as bad windings I would be better off just parting it out. Any and all help and suggestions are welcome and appreciated. If it is worth saving I would like to restore it and keep it for my own use.

Check the engine block for an ID. Through a little more research, it will tell you exactly what year it was produced.

Thanks for the tip John. I do believe I saw something on the engine. If I find something maybe I should call Miller and see if they can help. I'm not sure how much good that will do as I have heard that since ITW took over the tech support sucks. I hope that isn't the case.

MORE ON THE BIG 40

As advised by John, I looked at the engine for numbers. I will post them here:

Plate on side of block with alternator and oil filter:
Engine # 258820
spec 4316
TAP. CL. IN. 12
EX 20

(I have no idea what the last two numbers a for)

On the other side of the block down close to the oil pan there is a number in the casting. F-400A-612-0

My guess is its a continental engine. If its a 6 banger, its a 223 or 225. If a 4 banger, the most common one was an F163. The last 2 specs are for valve clearance. You have a flat head (engine) :)
