I smoked mine this weekend cutting copious amounts of 2x2x.25. :( i notice the new models claim 3hp now, i wonder if this was a problem with my older 2hp model.
Anyone ever attempted repairing/replacing the motor on one of these? Or is this the sign that i need a bandsaw?

That's it!!! An omen, a portent, God must be looking out for you!
What a great interpretation of the situation if you can get away with it. :)
I dunno about HF parts but I had an old Packard chop saw repaired about 9 or 10 years ago, had to have a new armature & that cost over 100 bucks. I should have bought a new saw even though it has lasted ever since. The repair shop said Packard makes saws for Milwaukee.
I used it some yesterday because I was working here at home & my horizontal bandsaw is at the shop. I was trying to cut some thick 2.5 x 2.5, finally gave up & torched it outside in the wind - ugly ugly!
By all means, take your hunnerd bucks or whatever it would take to fix the chopper & apply it to the bandsaw.
I think the money will be better spent.

Have you considered a dry cut carbide chop saw?

Don't know how long you've had the saw but if it hasn't been obviously abused HF is pretty good about replacing defective products. Just a thought....unless you want to scratch that itch for a bandsaw!;)

I bought a cheapie 14 inch chop saw on ebay $9.99 and $14 for shipping just to see what I would get. I realigned the blade shield and remounted the pivot so as to get it to cut square, and got some quality blades for it. I don't mind tinkering with things. I figure I saved $100 or so. My neighbor went through 3 dewalts to find one that would cut square and hold its settings right. Of course, for what we are cutting we should be using a decent bandsaw. But it works.
