Would an ME please explain whether or not there really is a need for left hand threaded wheel lug bolts and nuts?

Sort of. The if the wheel on the left side is "a little" loose, with right hand thread nuts the rotation of the wheel will work them loose. Same problem with the pulley for the tensioner for your serpentine belt. That bolt is left handed too. Probably the only one on your car or truck.
If your wheel never was a little loose or the bearing in the tensioner pulley never went bad, you would not need Left hand thread.

All the old Mopars have left and right lug nuts..

Also, every house fan blade retention nut. Same reasoning.

Damn right they do. My old 68 truck has leftys on it. They do the job for sure. My 78 that I wheel alot in. Does not have them and I have lost two wheels on that truck from the lugs coming loose.

Thats what they make torque wrenches....;)
ZTPaul does alot of "wheeling" and I'll bet he has never lost one..
And he runs FORDS..:D

Oh they were torqued on good and tight :p
Really not sure what caused them to brake loose. They were 35-14.5-16.5 tires, on a 8 lug axle. But yeah it happened.

I've never been convinced it makes a difference, but I do drive a truck with lefty thead on the left side. Never lost a wheel on a vehicle with all righties, either, and I'v had plenty of them over the years, too. Of course, I always clean and lube the threads and use the proper torque -- My fat butt on the end of the wrench is the calibrated, factory spec torque, right? :)

Normally all the big trucks have left and right threads, my welding rig (IHC 1900) is this way. My F350 has RH threads only. It has a lot to do with momentum and centrifugal force . . .

I think knock-off hub nuts are a different ball game, compared to multiples of lug nuts.

I lost a right front on a 49 ford PU with a flat head six. Must have been from snappin off the line too fast too often. :) Shoulda had left hand lug bolts.

Yes they sure are!:)

Yes they sure are!:)
The use of left and right hand knock-offs to prevent them from spinning off is apparent... not so with lug nuts, which were my original concern.
