Looks like it's grey and red. Could be a hydraulic head lift? Maybe it even keeps the head aligned when moving it?

Naw, it is blue and red. It does keep the head from rotating when you raise and lower it. :)

mike, what does the base of your alignment rod look like ?

is it attached the base of the mill or the table, surely it's the base.

Under the table top is 3" channel that the mill is bolted to. The pipe is welded to 1/2" plate that is bolted to the channel so it is pretty stiff. :)
