A TV program on welding: May 9

We've been receiving messages from the American Welding Society that the History Channel is devoting an episode of its program, "Modern Marvels," to "the history, science and technology of various welding methods."

The release for the AWS says, "In five segments, the show tells the story of popular welding processes – arc, explosion, underwater, robotic and friction welding. Included in the episode are companies and individuals involved in the development and practice of those processes."

The show is scheduled to air on Wednesday, May 9 at 8 p.m. Eastern. For more information, visit www.history.com/modernmarvels.

Great. That's something I've always wondered about. There are shows about just about everything -- except it seems welding.

How about if we appoint Zapster, Lorenzo, ZTFab, Microzone, David R, Pulser, et al. (my apologies to all those skilled welders I've omitted but you get the idea) to be the "Bob Villas" of welding. A new show in their respective shops every week. It would be bigger than anything on TV now. While not everybody welds, lots of people are interested in welding.

You know, with the hobby enthusiasts and the TV fab show junkies out there, it would be instantly successful.

It could be called "Through the flames" or "Build your own freaking stuff."


I thought about "Burn baby burn" not bad.

Also "Flaming Weldors" but that would have to air on Bravo and wouldn't be exactly what those viewers were looking for. Well maybe it is.

After writing all these names, how about just a welding and fabrication network? There is surely enough material to support something like that. The channel could buy out the rights to all the fab shows, and it would have a running start.

American chopper, American hot rod, how about American welder? it kills me when I watch shows on spike and other channels, like hot rod TV, that show with that fat dude and that chick that builds off road $hit. check out the welding they do, it usually sucks a$$ and a lot of there fabrication tips are bogus or very "elementry"- (make sure you clean the metal before you weld up your roll cage):rolleyes:. I hate how they encourage people to make there own roll cages and stuff, they don't realize how important $hit is and how your life can depend on it.

I have seen it. It was a neat show, but kinda short and not very detailed. I liked the part about butt welding main support columns on a high rise building. Something like 3 days for 2 weldors to complete the weld, if I remember it right. The section on pressurized underwater pipe welding was interesting too, as well as the explosion laminated plate welding and the ultrasonic plastic welding.

Well, since the original posting was 4/26/07, I don't think you'll save much time.

I heard it was a good show. I don't really watch TV. Try a youTube search. Bet you find it.

i think some of those hotrod and 4x4 shows should have shows with professional welders every so often showcasing primarily different types of welding and cutting..

i wish miller or lincoln also would do a small television series showing proper methods and materials and such... i think it would be well worth it to them and every home fabricator across the country...

also think they should have some shows pertaining to the machine tool trades, basic things like speeds and feeds, drilling, tapping, sawing and such... it just kills me when a friend is drilling a hole dry, running a drill motor wide open and he wonders why when i squirt wd40 on it and it drills so much better. i'll show up at his shop every now and then he hands me a handful of drill bits and asks me to sharpen them....
