I made this today because at work I was remembering how hard was to see the bead when I was first learning to weld. A lot of you guys probably don't remember, but it's only been 4 years since I ran my first bead in college so it is sort of still fresh in my mind.
This image is my interpretation of what the bead looks like when welding with wire as well as some tips to the beginner on how to stay in the bead and keep it where it needs to be.
btw, ignore the gun position, this is just a drawing. You will need to experiment with gun angle yourself. When welding with 1/16" dual shield I personally like to aim almost directly at the material and with a slight angle backwards or up (in the case of vertical-up) so I am dragging just slightly. Vertical up I like to push just slightly.
Hope this helps the beginners out there! Keep practicing! It'll click one day and you'll never understand why you couldn't see it before. Watch for the metal melting in front of the bead and watch the molten climb onto the metal. And aim for that root!
