Dodge hemi came in with a hole in the side, rod broke. 1940something Kaiser block was cracked from cyl bore into intake port x2.
Cracks in Kaiser were ground out and radiused for spray welding. Preheat to 700 degrees, OA spray with ni powder, post heat 700, slow cool.
Hemi- cut patch, weld with ni55 about 1/2 to 3/4 inch at a time- peen the snot out of it, when cool repeat.
I hot repair inside combustion chamber because arc will not work. The cold repair only needs to keep oil from leaking out. And yea I epoxied the inside of the cold repair!

What spray welding gear do you use?

I bagged a Eutectic setup for 35 bucks at a flea market but don't know how to use it.

Peter, you will never cease to amaze me. Awesome.

Was that a crack between the coolant passage and broken head bolt too?

What kind of material was the patch made out of? Awesome repairs!

Castweld,

May I ask where you procure your Eutectic powder? I have a few torches and would like to purchase some powder. Thanks!

Nice save as usual Peter! I 'spect the hemi died as a result from the powdered metal connecting rod failing... Been some in my area that failed out of nowhere (not driven hard, low miles/high miles, makes no difference).

You can call Eutectic Castolin & they used to direct sell and have help desk support. Their powders are smaller particle sized and have the best operator appeal (but you pay for it).

Stoody is a bigger player but support is limited (get it through your LWS)

Sulzer-Metco is another (used to direct sale but I don't know now).

Allstate-(ESAB) through your LWS

Wall Colmonoy in Michigan sells more than all the rest combined, and pretty much moves the industry (especially military & aerospace). They used to work both direct & through LWS. Support is very strong but the brazing powders aren't as user friendly as eutectic (they don't look as wet when brazing).

Good Luck

I was in a hemi warehouse one time that had hemi motors from floor to ceiling. Many blocks I was looking at had metal patches with pop rivets. Guy said non of the water jackets were hit so they are good motors yet.

Nice repairs!

Yes it was cracked there also. I welded a nut on broken bolt and unscrewed, then installed two lock-n-stitch pins and key lock thread insert.

Hot rolled mild steel.
