Wow - THAT is why I always wear my goggles, regardless if I'm grinding or not, when in the shop!
That would have been a major OUCH!

Yup, bet that woulda hurt. The company I used to work for had a pair of safety glasses on display. The guy that was wearing them was using a .27 cal Hilti gun shooting down track to a steel beam. The pin shattered and about 75% of it bounced back and into his glasses. The pin passed about 2/3 of the way through the lens before it finally stopped. Good reason to wear them....and carry a change of pants. If that had been me, I mighta needed fresh pants.

I always wear goggles all the time. As I've said plenty of times, I constantly hear crap bouncing off them (can't see it; it always happens so fast) and that's enough to convince me.

You might not have thought you would need safety glasses to drive a nail but... When I was a young carpenter I was working with a journeyman who was driving 16p nails into a form. He was a 3 pounder, 1 pound set the nail and 2 more to drive it home. Well on this particular day he set the nail then when he hit it again it flew back into his eye. He lost the eye.

Never worn them. But I stay very sharp in the work place. I am from the past though.
Been to the eye doctor twice. Once for a stainless steel shard. The second for coupric oxide contamination.
The first time I had on a full face shield. When I lifted it up, it picked up some stuff in my hair. When I put it down it got in my eye.
The second time it would not have mattered. It was an air born powder. Very painful to get some in your eye.
But unless you are totally comfortable with working like that I recommend some type of eye wear.
Sincerely,
William McCormick
