On one of my other favorite forums (second fav of course) there was talk of making a tig using a car alternator....Myth or fact...???

Yes it can, I have never done so I don't know the particulars. But a neighbor of mine did it and used it to stick weld with. Not a great arc quality and he was only using an 80 amp alternator. In theory an alternator is a CC power supply. Let us know if you have try and how it works out!

Lots of guys out there in the 4x4 world running welders off of batteries and alternators. It takes around a 100 amp alternator and a kit (terminals, guage, etc) to make a pretty decent trail welder that is capable of welding stick at a pretty decent rate.
