As I was responding to another post, I recalled (with a smile) the safety discussion in the very first session of my "Intro. to Welding" class. I thought we were going to get a long lecture, but the instructor pretty much just said "Well, you're gonna get burned" and that was the end of it - and he was right.

Later on, he did give more job specific advice - the most pertinent being to not pick up any old piece of metal lying around before checking to see how hot it is first. Oh, and he also advised that if a tank gets knocked over, to not even wait to see it hit the ground - just run.

In my case, only a couple of crispy fingers, and a little hot slag got in through the holes in the school's gloves, after which I bought my own. And I burned a 4x6 hole in a shirt doing a t-joint with gas - the instructor said he was impressed that I beat out the flames with my filler hand, then kept going. Sure glad I was wearing a t-shirt underneath the one that was on fire.

yep, just because you are wearing gloves doesn't mean that it is safe to pick up the piece of metal that was glowing red hot about 30 seconds ago. You figure that out about 10 seconds after you pick it up.
