I got one 3-4 months ago. Cann't remember which one, but is cost 49.95 and it's orange.
Had the check engine light come on in my F150 used code reader and fixed the problem. It worked good for me.

Did it just read you the code, then you have to go look it up? Does it do anything other than output the code?

The one I have reads the codes, then you lookup the codes in a manual that comes with the reader. After you make repair use code reader to erase the codes and turn engine light off.
This is the one I have:

Also, in case you didn't know Autozone stores will hook one up to your vehicle at no charge and get the codes for you. I've only done it once but they were able to tell me not only that I needed a new O2 sensor but the reader told them which one (of the two on the vehicle) was bad.

I don't have experience with on eof the $40 ones, but I bought this one: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=94217 earlier this year when it was on sale for $79.99, and used a 30% coupon (brought it down to ~$55). I have used in on several GM, Dodge, and Jeep products. It works just fine, even on the new CAN protocol. It will display the code text versus looking it up in the book.
