it should have a centre punch mark on each leg of the rule, and 0 to 120 degre's marked out on one leg.take your dividers and set to what ever angle you want and open the rule then set each point of your dividers into the centre punch marks.sorry not very well explained.

I have a line of chords. It was given to me by a very smart Boily. He gave it to me when i finished my apprenticeship. It is an amazing tool!!

Tin bashers photo is awesome. You lay the two legs of the rule against the angle you are measuring
then take a pair of dividers and adjust them so that they fit into the two circle scribed puch marks, shown in tinbashers top photo.
Now if you take those dividers and place them on the scale shown in tinbashers bottom photo, on the bottom leg of the rule you will see a zero mark place one point of your divider in there, now swing the other point onto the rule and that is your precise angle.
Conversely you can set angles by setting your dividers to the angle scale on the bottom leg and adjusting the punch marks on your line of chords rule to fit your dividers.
This is an awesome layout tool and a really accurate way to set a mitre on a saw
