Van Norman Brake lathe question

On a model 333, the spindle reduces down to 1" where a brake drum is clamped. The other end has a large nut. I took it off and it is a shaft that unscrews from the other end.

I thought the 1" end woud have a taper that the threads would pull tight. I am trying to remove the 1" part but I can't get it to budge. The 1" end is larger where it goes inside the spindle. Any ideas? Thanks :confused:

I am thinking that it should be a taper fit. I have it soaking in PB Blaster right now.
