This tank has a leak around the drain bung at the lower right in the pic. My FIL repaired it with JB Weld, but of course it still leaks.

I was cautioned about welding on this since it's a pressure vessel and I'm a rank amateur. I think it would be better to replace it anyway.

But if I get a new tank, won't I have to weld brackets on and stuff?

Where can I get a tank? Sears?

The picture is at the bottom of this thread, which gives some history on it here. (http://www.weldingweb.com/showthread.php?threadid=699)

Yup, I remember that thread and your compressor - and the advice you got from Jim & Franz at the time. Sears sold a gazillion of those machines over the years & I feel sure you could get a tank from them - probably for about what a compressor should cost. I would be inclined to search for an old one that someone has trashed the motor or compressor on through neglect. Thousands of them have been sitting over the years with little or no use or attention and I think if you can be patient, you are likely to run across one or something very similar. Check your local repair shops & ask around, watch the yard & garage sale ads. Put the word out. I think I would be able to find one within a week or two around here.

That's a good idea. I just don't know where to start when I'm looking for old stuff, I'm not an experienced junk man, but I need to be :D

Used tool dealers, tool repair shops, compressor repair shops, electric motor repair shops. Just outline your situation & ask them if they have anything sitting around. If they don't, ask them if they know any shade-tree compressor mechanics. Even scrap yards will turn one up every now & then. Wear your old work clothes when you go; look thrifty; businesses that are still in business understand that. :D Go to flea markets and ask around, talk to anybody that has old tools and parts for sale. For that matter, welding shops, fab shops & even auto repair & wood working shops, cabinet builders - all these people go through compressors and replace them.

rusted,
Have you looked at the ones that surpluscenter has?

You can always cut the brackets off with a piece of the old tank, and install the bracket assembly onto the new tank with bands.
That method of attaching the mount to the tank was quite common \until the 1950s, and in my opinion transferred a lot less vibration to the tank itself.

No, I don't know of any surplus center. I"m not familiar with this area much.

Franz, that is a good idea. I would band it on there with the big band strap we used in the Nav, and put rubber under the straps and the mount assembly. Good thinkin' I could use any 10-15gal tank.

just get a new tank, these are about $100 from surplus center or you could get one from HF for a bit cheaper but will take a long time for delivery.

rusted,
Wouldn't you know it. I was poking around at my current job site (a scrap yard) and they've got that same darn compressor sitting off in a corner....
