Welding to cast diff...

I have a set of Dana 44s that I'm using for a spring over axle setup on my YJ. I have to weld the drivers side spring pad to the cast part of the diff housing. The spring pad is mild steel. If I prep the surfaces real well and pre-heat the cast steel will welding with my 220v MIG machine be suitable on the cast?

Cast steel welds almost like mild steel. Just grind it and weld it.
