I just tried a trick I learned from an old timer. Wash your smelly, nasty, greasy, grimy, sweaty, burnt, and destroyed leathers in Woollite. I tried it today, put em in the washer add Woollite, wash on cold and air dry. They are now clean, soft and don't stink.

I've always just thrown them in the washer with detergent like anything else. Then hang them up to air dry. Once dry they're stiff as a board, just throw them in the dryer on fluff or some such non-heating cycle for 20 - 30 minutes. They are now soft again and only need a little candle wax on the fasteners and they're ready to go.

I like mine stinking, it keeps my co-workers away from me so I can work in peace. :)

Please pardon my ignorance, why do you candle wax on the leathers.

Lubrication,,,it keeps the snaps working effortlessly, you'll never pull one out of the leather when they're clean and waxed.

olddad, thank you for the information. I will have to try the wax on my leathers.

Only problem I have with snaps is them getting spatter on them. Maybe I should spray some anti-spatter on them. :)

Nice tips; I'll remember that in the winter when I get my full leathers.

I just did my sleeves, and my jacket again today, as well as wax the snaps. Good as new, just a little darker. P.S. I use bees wax, or Bag Balm on my snaps.

I took your advice and had my wife run an older set of cape sleeves, and a snap on bib though the washer - worked GREAT. Leathers still have some discolouration but I hate green anyway. Cape sleeves are soft and pliable again, all the sweat stains are gone, and best of all, they don't freeze you in your tracks 20' away anymore.

Thanks for the tip.

Wished I had heard of it sooner, would've saved me some money on leather.

I wore a set of Tyvek coveralls for several days during a sandblasting/painting job. They were nasty, but I thought I'd try washing them. I was afraid that they would come apart and leave junk all over the washing machine, but it worked fine! I tried drying them on the 'Fluff' (no heat) cycle, but they didn't dry. Hung them on a hanger and let them air dry.
