Anyone have a favorite product to spray their vehicles with? Special applicators? Tips?
I'm not happy spending $500 every year to do 2 cars, pick up and van. It's needed where I live, though.

I am a big fan of drain oil and a dry dirt road myself.

Oil based rustoleum, you can thin it and spray it but it works better brushed on. I've seen it used side by side with por15 and the regular old rustoleum is tougher.

but regular undercoating in a spray can works too... alot quicker.

Hi All,
first post here ; Alstom Power now uses raw vegetable oil as rust preventative on new product after protractive side by side out door testing-applied with wagner type sprayers.

Welcome to Welding Web, Baldy347 :waving:

I've thought of using vegetable oil for different industrial applications, but I worry about the critters. Would vegetable oil attract critters, and would they be tempted to chew on wire or hoses that had trace amounts of veg oil?

Good Luck

Use Oleo. :) Cockroaches won't even touch it. Unwrap a cube of it and set it outside for a year. It'll still be there in it's original form, untouched.

Serious?

Every once in a while I pour vegetable oil on the hardware of an infrequently used slider gate; somebody definitely eats down the grass after each application. That's why I'd be concerned with applying vegetable oil to anything that can't stand a little chewing.

Good Luck

Alright, I'm convinced.
If I find any around here, I'll send it to Stack-O-Dimes.
He and Specter can split it!

I ended up buying a rustproofing gun from NAPA ( $60, came with a couple of different tips) and NAPA rustproofing oil with the impressive sounding name of Value 2000H. It worked out to about $5 worth of product per vehicle but I bet I missed a few spots. It was getting cold and I was rushing.

Best thing I found up here in salt using Canada is to spray the underside of you vehicle with used motor oil and go spinning down a dirt road a few times, dosen't wash off.. Repeating every year, over a few years you get a great corrosion barrier, super cheap, super effective, how can you go wrong?

How much does this help and will it stop rust on older rigs.

Spraying used motor oil to the underside vehicle creates a barrier to oxidization and the dust prevents rainwater from washing it off. It will reduce continued rusting, but to STOP rust POR 15 is probably your best bet. If your vehicle isnt vintage, the old oil is the best. Tars and other surface treatments are fine until there is a break in the barrier, then it holds moisture between the barrier and the vehicle causing an excellerated rate of rust, avoid these if at all possible. POR15 neutralises the rust and turns it into hard black spots. Great stuff, but not cheap, you can find the Mfgr. by googling "por 15". I have used the used oil method for the last 20 years and even up here in salt road country, the rust was at best minimal, I'm very happy with the cost of this method. Princess auto (and I bet HF in the US) sells a device specifically for underbody oil spraying and ay around $10, a good deal, I've had mine for about 14 yrs. Previous to that I found service centres that do the deed for anywhere from $20 to $50. So when you change your oil, spray it on the underbody and drive down a dusty gravel road to get the barrier up there.

to stop rust OSPHO or any phosphoric acid based product.

I have used linseed oil to rustproof tools and have used a paint product called Penetrol. It does wonderful.

Fluid Film

its by far the best product to use for prevent rust to your vehicle. Its used by the US NAVY for all cables and chains. The one year I didn't use it, my dump truck started rusting. BTW We plow snow for state highway in Maryland, where we used treated salt.

I just did my truck and my son's truck this weekend, one with Krown and one with Fluid Film. Fluid film by far was the better one, it seemed to cover better, looked thicker when it was applied and didn't drip near as much....Mike
