Hi Everybody!
I'm trying to find as much information on this as possible, so whatever help/info/tips ya'll could throw my way would be great. I've got a 1984 steel 2 horse bumper pull trailer with a ramp load. The hinges/welds holding the ramp door on are shot and since the ramp is extremely heavy, I just want to pull it off and convert the trailer into a step-up. I'm not sure at all about if this is possible or how easy it would be. I've also toyed with the idea of just re-doing the hinges and then attaching continuous coil ramp assist springs on each side.
any suggestions?

I should be able to take pictures on Friday, and I'll post links to them then!

Both are possible and shouldn't be too terribly much trouble. Personally, I would think that keeping it ramp style and adding a spring assist would probably be the easiest, cheapest and quickest thing to do. Of course, my oppinion might change after I see pics.

Yup, I've worked on those, I have not rebuilt the door system on one yet though! Some doors have heavy hinge springs that kind of look like the spring in a clothes-pin. I don't like the nasty little habit of heavy garage door springs rubbing against you or a horse and YANKing hair outta you wholesale! Cables may not be much better, kind of a trip hazard. If the trailer is low enough, as many horse trailers are, a step up would be ok. Pictures and decisions are in order, til friday. :waving:
P.S. Funny habit with welding on horse trailers is hay catching fire! :blob2:

I have worked on a rusty hinged ramp. I had to go a long ways to find some good stuff to weld to. Have fun. :)
We want pics before and after.

Absolutely no help from me, just more doom and gloom forecast. Horse pee dissolves steel like sugar :D . So you want to plan on more work than what you see on the surface.
