I have not done any welding, but need to make some window and door burglar bars- probably using 1/2 or 5/8" square or round stock and 3/8 X 1 1/4" strap or similar- will a basic mig welder do the job- or do I really need more amperage? Any help much appreciated. I have a bridgeport, so can drill out to 3/4" for round stock, and weld the intersections.

Also any advice on how to make those nice spirals out of steel strap?

What do you consider a basic mig welder? If you mean 120V models, not really. It depends on your fondness for tools. One of the most economial real machines is the MM210, about 1200, and you wouldnt likely need to upgrade. It will run 035 solid wire well. If you have other shop work its a great investment. A minimum would be Hobart HH180 but its a little light for my tastes on anything over 1/4 and really too light for structural work even with that.
