Hey all,

My name is Shawn and I'm new to the site. I had been a shipyard welder for about 6 years and have been in and out of the trade for the last few. I have done some mig welding lately, but want to go back to flux.

My question is I have never taken a 3G or 4G test till last week. Bombed out too. I can't remeber how to set welder. The test was on about a 1" beveled plate, no backstrap. How do I set the machine? Do I set it hot? I know how to lay the strings, one in the middle, one on left, one right, over lapping etc. But it is setting the machine part I can't remember. And I use to weld x ray butts on Navy ships too, ( go figure). Can't find a place here in New Orleans to get refresher course.

Thank for the help,

Gramo

Which size wire and are you using gas (which mixture), then the answer. John

It's 0.32 and argonne gas 75%.

You are not going to pass a 3 or 4G with no backing with FCAW, but the setting for .035 is 26 volts and 180 amps. John my.02

I just did my 3/8s open back. I set a 3/32 gap on the bottom 1/8 on top with the 3/32 land. Worked good for me. this was with mig by the way.

Were talking Flux Core with C-25 Gas. If you can do this, you need to set up shop and teach this and become $$$$$$$. Open root with Fluxcore doesn't work. John

Alright maybe I got the not back strap wrong. The beveled plates had two peices holding the two plates togeather across the back of the plates. However, the gap for the plates were as thick as a clear lens. After completion of the fillet weld, the next step was to gouge the back, then do a pass on here. But from what I am reading, it sounds like I needed to run the machine hot. This is pretty much what I wanted to know. I was not sure of the gas mixture, I only know it was argonne versus CO2 (which I prefer to the argonne. I never did like that gas cause it burns so friggin hot naturally.

Any know where I may beable to find an online video or photos of the completed weld.

Thanks

ok im not sure as ive never run the test but at my work there running dual shield open root tests like this to qual. for a job. again i havent run the test but ive heard rund the root a little colder than normal so you dont blow key hole out. then turn it back up for fill and cap.
but you could run hot your just gonna have to increase travel speed. maybe try the cover lense root opening with an equal size landing.

and the two pieces are just run off tabs. then yes you back grind then keep the machine hot.
but i may be wrong

Thank you all for input. By the way do any of you know of any offshore companies hiring welders in Lousisian? I have never welded out in the Gulf but have had other jobs out there so that could help in landing me a position out there.

if your having trouble with 3 and 4g then there is no way you are ready to weld offshore. try a 6g open root, pass that and your ready
