Just got laid off from my job. The company I worked for just laid off a hand full of people from all three shifts. So I have to get a jump on the market before they do....

Tig,Mig and Stick weld experience.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Boy that sux..
I feel your pain..

If I hear of anything I'll let you know..

I may be in Mass but I'll look around..

You may want to look into a "Headhunter" agency..
Go to jobfind.com..

Fill out the forms and let them come to you..

I still get job offers still from when I was laid off 5 years ago..

...zap!

That State of NY was hiring a few weeks ago but you have to have a D.O.T. certification.

They were hiring in this area for canals. But the State has put a freeze on non-essential positions.

Plus I am DOT in all three( Vert/ horz/overhead)
ASME
AWS both in pipe Mig and Tig.

Got to love NY.......

I am with you on this problem. I lack the extensive expierence with just about 2 years with all three types of welding. I dont have any certs for the lack of money, which blows because i know i could get them. There are only a couple company hiring here, they are "super" steel, aquatic dev. all lifts, el paso.. Dont know anymore, they come and go everymonth. I've been laid off for 3 months now and it seems like theres enough welders around that gobble up the jobs within 1-2 weeks of posting. i was getting $16hr and i am asking for $13-$14, when i go fo interviews. is it to much? should i go lower and wait a a couple years to work my way back up to what i was already making?

MNM,
Zak and Super Steel, should be good starting points. I would also try MetWeld in Altamont. STS also has a high turn over rate. I am still waiting to hear back from Local 7.
The one thing that kills me about this area is the high turn over rate, with such low paying jobs.
And the jobs seem to come and go every few months. Seems that either the company's can't keep people after they higher them, or they realize that they get what they pay for. They pay low and get low quality welders. And now they all seem to think that 10-12 is the pay scale.

Sometimes the thing to do is look for work out of state. During past layoffs, that is what I always did since I was a renter. I have followed all the major booms around the country. Now, I own a condo. If I get laid off I will be in dire straits with the current real estate market. I see jobs at twice my current salary, but I don't even consider them. It pays to rent for some people, but then there is always the desire to put down roots.

I have tried them and one is to far to travel for what they want to pay. I tried the local union and its just a waiting game. I cant move yet or everytime I lose my job, but I do want out of this area if this going to be a problem again.
Here is a few more places to look, Phillips aka Intermagnetics(Latham), Reo Welding(Cohoes), Albany Steel(Menands).

Philips / Intermag. Was the job that layed me off. They are going downhill fast. Laid of over 25 welders.

Thats sad.. I worked there last year for a little bit. I was on 1st and 2nd shift, mainly 2nd. I thought the t-rex was going to take off. When i left they were doing about 11, 12 in total a week, and it was suppose to increase. Why did they build-on the building for last year?

I was on 3rd for a year then moved to 2nd over a year ago. I talked to a guy who still works their and he said they are 6 months ahead. When I left they had 22 T-rex's sitting in the new part. over 40 F2k's and a hand full of Opens.
