$31/hr sounds decent, until you said that it's WITH per diem. That much isn't all that enticing these days. If we consider it in terms of hourly rate and perdiem, it would come to the equivalent of $27/hr and $48/day per diem or $25/hr and $72/day per diem. Not only that, but if $6/hr of that $31 is per diem, then that $6/hr doesn't get multiplied by 1.5 to mean more for overtime. You can get that many different places these days.

Further, people with CuNi experience aren't that easy to find.

That sounds like a shipyard job. I agree with the other comments. $31.00 per hour could include $7.00 per hour pay with $24.00 per hour perdeim. On a ten hour day you would loose $120.00.

And also as mentioned above, quality welders that can weld CuNi are goiong to be less common than most. Seawater soaked CuNi pipe can be a pain.

Non-Union tube welders/pipe welders were testing in Baton Rouge last year for $32.00 and $90.00 perdiem. I don't know the contractors but I was in the test lab off and on for a couple of weeks and heard more than a couple of people mention that wage.

likely this job is at the new thysenkrupp stainless plant , they are doing a bit of post processing, hence the need for all the piping.

this is probably a job placement service and they are taking a healthy piece of the pie.
If interested I would find out who the actual contractor is and call them directly.

I think the last rates I saw for this type of work at our company was in mississipi and the
hourly was 35 plus 400 week per diem. but this was 2 summers ago and welders were rarer
than hens teeth at the time

Ameriforce is the middleman here. google searched the phone number

I've seen all the ads from the shipyard temp services, and all their pay is like $21/hr and $150 a day per diem. those head hunters are getting a pretty good chunk of the money that us welders should get! I worked @ Newport News Shipyard in 2001 and they were paying us $18/hr and $10/hr perdiem, but I found out the temp services was making more than half my total pay package per hr for basically hooking me up with the job. Beware, unless I was down to my last pack of smokes, 6 pack of beer, and tank of gas I wouldn't work for them. I've also heard that if you drag up without a 2wk notice they'll pay you miminum wage for all hours owed. I'm sure there are some good services out there, but just make sure you read all the fine print before you take a job at a temp service.

I have never worked for a temp service, but have had experience with several here in the automotive industry in Michigan. Quite a few places here will NOT hire anyone direct, but do everything thru a temp agency. Aerotek is a big one here.

They even take the referrences off your resume & call them to "head hunt" under the guise they "got your name from someone"

I have a friend that works for a defense contractor & used my name on his referrence list while putting applications in at several places. I got an innocent call from a "guy" looking for a experienced CNC machinist. How funny when I asked who he was he admitted he was a canvasser for Aerotek. I then told him I weld & repair welding equipment. His gears swiftly shifted from machining jobs, to welding ones. I believe their canvassers make a commission for their confirmed prospects. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's a scam all the way around.

The middleman is the one making the real money here. Like you said, there are probably some honorable companies out there, but anyone who calls me with an ambigously vauge "job offer".... Yeah, right.

Was getting $50/hr on SS tig on pipe at a recent job. Only equipment needed was my hood. Collectively, welders do this field a big disservice when they take pay half of what it should be.
