It was around break time so me and the forman stepped out for a minute to talk, after talking for a bit we hear someone start to grind, and then we hear what appeared to be screaming. So we ran inside to find this moron, had almost cut his stomach open by the grinder. Aparently he thought it was cool to show the new kids the "Hey! I can grind with one hand trick!!1!!" But he was lucky and only got some cuts...
While I had some fun by taking pics and calling him so names that I shouldn't post on here, the Forman chewed him a new one . Anywho, Here are the pics, Enjoy!
This is how we found him

What is it they said about baggy clothes and machinery? If he had those bib straps hangin' down while working the foreman should have sent him home for that in addition for misuse of equipment!

No, he had everything on right, but he started to take it off when we came in after the incident. I'm pretty sure he's going to get booted out of the program.
From what I understand he had taken one hand off, and it slip towards him and caught on to his overalls..

I guess no guard and no handle also shows you're coo. Where is the other hand supposed to go. Maybe the foreman should be sent home, too.

I use one hand all the time, not saying it's right but it's me.
As far as a guard, never use a grider without it.
Long time ago I had a 7" grinder kick back and hit me in the chest (grinding something in a vise). I was actually scared to look down, ended up cutting thru jacket, coveralls, shirt and t shirt but no flesh.
If there had been no guard, wouldn't be pleasant....Mike

I worked at a place as a teenager that built portable lighting trailers. We use a 40 or 60 grit rubber backed sanding pad on a 7" B&D Wildcat grinder. We had run out of rubber packing pads and the one I was using had a pretty goot chunk loose in it.
I was sanding waist high on the edge of the fender and the backing pad came apart and caught t he edge. The grinder handle hit me in the testicles and the paper edge of the sanding sheet went not far below. I didn't see what happened, I just felt that dull deep pain and felt the blood going down my leg.
Lotsa blood and pain. As I walked towards the toolroom with blood running down the inside of my leg I was walking VERY carefully as I was afraid to step on one of my buddies. All I could think of was how much it would hurt. I was wearing slip on boots so I figured thats where it was.
Be careful, Loosely held drills, Boiler Tube rolling equip, grinders, etc.. can get on you quick.

I would never use a grinder that size that didn't have a side handle. They're just too powerful to hold without one. If the student is booted, the teacher deserves something also, for allowing unsafe equipment to be kept and used in the shop.

Agreed, Anyone who is suppossedly teaching, and has grinders of that size with no guard OR side handles needs to be booted! Way to go teach. I know my worker's comp would love to know where people are learning some of their habits from, lol

Judging by your previous posts I don't think your experianced enough to be a foreman.

Sounds similar to an injury a guy I once worked with sustained. He was climbing a caged ladder that went up the side of a big curing oven to make a repair. Instead of making two trips up the ladder, he decided to plug in the 7 inch side grinder and go up the ladder. About half way up the ladder he managed to pull the trigger. The wheel caught him just below the knee and traveled up to split his scrotum. He lost one of his buddies and is now out on disability from the injury of years ago.
When I worked at a paper mill we use to discuss injuries that happed at other mills to try to learn from them. One was where a guy was grinding and one of the strings from his parka got wrapped up in the wheel. He got a bad cut on his face, got knocked out and lost most of his front teeth. He was lucky he wasn't on a ladder or scaffold.
I have always considered the grinder to be one of the most dangerous tools a craftsman can use, and I think of the guy I use to work with every time I pick one up.

What I try to remind myself of, and what I tell others constanly, is
The
Machine
Doesn't
Care
It doesn't care if it grinds or cuts metal or wood or flesh or bone or all of them.
The machine is typically stronger and faster than you are, it is up to you to be smarter.

One of the first things my father taught me is : A machine has no respect for ignorance. I have seen far too many instances that proved what he said was true.

Thats a lot of grinder to use with one hand. Also where is teh guard...seriously a grinder that big and no guard is a mixture for injury even with the use of two hands....

Good eye! Someone there is too thick to realize the cost of junk tools. I assume it's a school? It still has to be taught that when people are paid by the hour and they don't have safe, working tools the money is flying right out the window. :realmad:

you can ruin a perfectly good grinder by doing that.
You can cut yourself up with it but just dont ruin the tools.
Remember, flesh and bones heal with time, broken tools dont.
now kick him out for misuse of the tool

HELLO TO ALL,
it appears to me, the grinder does not have the
assist handle. this allows the operator to grind
holding it right handed, or left handed, depending
on which side of the grinder it is installed. this
should always be with the grinder.

I guess you have to look it in a good way. Didnt' get hurt, the machine didn't get damaged, and the stuff will come off of the field half a day later than I had planned. Could be worse:)
A repair link costs about $2, and as usual, in my usual way, I don't happen to have one on the shelf. 16 mile round trip in the morning. Dog will love the ride.

So today was my lucky day. I just happened to have to share a booth with a fellow MIG student and we were taking turns. So I get in start doing some work, and he decides to stand in and watch, the guy keeps bumping into me, like hes moving around.
I stop and tell him to get out. He did, then came back about two minutes later doing the same stuff.
So I lift my helmet up to began the authoritive speaking process, and he hits the back of my head with his elbow and he begans to horseplay with another kid (which is strictly a big BIG No-No), and in my hand was my MIG rod (still hot ofcourse) and I now have this lovely burn right by my nose. I just about lost it.

My temper. I wanted to kill him. I just get so frustrated with people sometimes, I have a bad temper. I wanted to shove a 7018 down both of his eyes, then stick his fingers under the cutting torch and, well you get the idea. But I didn't, because that's not very lady like.
