Pros & Cons on this shield setup? http://www.accustrike.com/mig.htm

Just ran across the design & wondered if anyone had seen or used it. Might be usable for tack welding things together. I would think you could (DIY)make one with an auto-darkening shield cartridge that would be more functional than a set darkness level.

I don't like it.

First, there's no side protection whatsoever. Lean a bit to the wrong way or weld near something light in color, and you're going to be half blinded by the arc or whatever its reflecting off of.

I don't see that being useable for much other than tacks. It sure as heck would get in the way of 99% of the things I have to MIG.

it is not a bad idea if your fabricating but not for full on welding

Neat item for tacking on a production line. Won't last long because of the close proximity to the weld spatter. Personally, I'll stick to my helmet.

It reminds me of the welding/cutting torch from the movie "aliens," lol.

I actually have had one like these for years. It has a clamp to attach it to the mig gun. I use it only for body work. i have suffured no ill effects. It's better than the people that just close their eyes.

For the 5,000 tacks i usually put on my bridge projects it prob wouldn't be too bad to use. But i wonder if there is still some UV's coming around the sides that will still burn my skin? But i would try it or make my own...Bob
