So I am looking in the barter section of craigslist yesterday morning and spot this:

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/bar/874731430.html

It has about 20,000 on it, no rust

I went and checked it out and after some horse tradin' I got a new truck.

It was whitewashed after it left the military, then this guy replace alot of the body panels because they had holes in them from all manner of brackets that were bolted to it. Then he started to paint it orange and lost interest.

The bad news, the trim pieces like all the glass, the cap etc are all off of it. But they are all there he says.

The good news, the motor, trans and everything else are in it and ready to go, i could theoretically put 2 batteries in it and if it wasn't a 23 year old diesel that hasn't run in 2 years, it would run.

But even though it has barely any miles on it, it is 23 years old and it has been sittin in that garage for 2 years.

The military 24v system is intact and so is the original glow setup.

So, I have the tech manuals, and I know of a couple of things I am going to check before
attempting to turn the motor over, the oil in the motor, new fuel in the tank, and a couple of relays that I read can get stuck causing the starter to just run and run.

I also thought it might be a good idea to turn it over with a breaker bar before trying the starter.

Other than that, this is my first time bringing back a diesel from the dead.
What should I do guys?

Change your fuel filters, prime the fuel system by taking taking off the return line & pressurize the fuel tank a bit with a bit of air. Reconnect the return line so there are no leaks.

Get a remote starter switch that connects to the starter & a can of WD-40, remove the air cleaner & squirt WE-40 in the intake manifold as you are cranking. DO NOT USE ETHER ON THESE MOTORS, SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR. Using the WD-40 will allow it to spin fast enough that the lift pump will put fuel into the injection pump. Won't hurt the motor & it should start.

Injection pump must have 12 volts to it, so check that before you try to crank it. Test light with the key in the "on - not start" position should tell you if you have power. If not, stop& trace down the problem. Once running it should continue to run until either power is shut off or runs out of fuel.

Get yourself a good GM diesel manual it will help.

Have a couple extra filters ready even if you drain the tank and replace it the new diesel (ultra low sulfur) has a scrubbing agent in it. On road tractors it seemed to tank two tank fulls before it had the system clean and the filters quit plugging. When it first appeared at the fuel stops it was good for business as it doesn't take long to change a filter and there is a call out charge as well as the mark up on fuel. Otherwise you sound like you are ready to go.

Is that the Oldsmobile engine that was converted to diesel by GM?

No, the 6.2L Diesel engine was designed by Detroit Diesel. It was purpose built for light duty trucks & designed to be Normally Aspirated.

If a person decides to put a turbo on one, a complete rebuild is in order to put in low compression pistons. Other performance mods include head work, different injectors & mods to the Standyne injection pump. Max safe horsepower is around 300. A person could push it some, but longevity will suffer - as in rods/pistons will fail.

Banks is about the only company that makes a turbo for the 6.2 L Diesel. But it's limited on boost to about 8 psi. Any more than that, your gonna break parts.

You're thinking of the 5.7 that was based on the Olds 350 Rocket gas job. They selected it for its strong bottom end. It went something like this:

GM Marketing: "We need a diesel now!"
Engineering" "We're not ready yet."
Management: "Make it happen. Marketing wants a diesel now!"

...and one of the worst GM blunders was born. Acceptance of the 6.2 suffered as a result.
