Hello

I've been usign Metal Core Gmaw for a little over a month now and at first it was pretty tricky to figure out a technique that worked for me

But heres some pictures i took the other day just practicing

Sorry for the large Images, maybe for xmas i'll get a decent camera that has Macros for closer quality pictures

Size plate? Wire speed? Volts?

Nice looking stuff.

I have ESAB C6M I think. Its only for flat unless I used pulsed spray.

These plates were just scrap pieces i cut at work

1/4" thick
I think i was using a Miller 22a machine, i cant remember right now

Wire speed = 355
Volts = 30.5

Hello, As a new member could you please explain a little further, The welds look great by the way,What were the volts and wire speed compared with normal solid wire, Also is any special "torch action" used to get such good results,
Many thanks
Best regards Gordon

What size is the wire?

well, Metal core is used for thicker steel such as i-beams or structural things that need more penetration then solid wire.

For solid wire i use, depending what im welding, i have used 26V and 412WS which came out alright
21.5 V
260 WS

Metal Core .. .045 wire size
30.5 V
355 WS

More metal gets deposited faster and more penetration is achieved. And its Very hot,

at first i was trying everything, just stringers, slow whip and pauses which gave me a rippled effect but i never got the kind of beads i wanted, was discouraging. From watching people picked up on a better way. In my opinion the smooth bead looks nicer then a rippled one, when people went on breaks i practiced.

I use a push method with about an inch of stick out from the nozzle and i use a fairly quick whip and pause method but with no pause, if that makes any sence. and i just try to keep the bead consistent with the leg lengths

Thanks for the comments and if your not sure what i mean by the method, just ask

I have only welded with .045” Lincoln Ultra-Core 712C cored wire in the flat position. It is supposed to be an all position wire but I found it difficult to weld in any other position than flat. Directions state to use 100% CO2 Gas.

I ran the 712C wire at 400 ipm @ 27 volts which averaged at 230 amps. Even though the Lincoln 712C runs very smooth and washes in with deep penetration I would also like a cored wire to run vertical up and horizontal.

Please provide the Brand and Stock No. of the cored wire you used and what Gas were you using with it and/or other settings used for out of position welding if possible.

Thanks,

well, i checked it out today and the roll dosnt really say to much other then its 0.045 metal core wire and the machine i used is hooked up to a manifold (i think thats what it is), a gas line connected throughout the whole shop

Im not quite sure what that gas% is. But i only have been using this stuff for a little while and there are a few techniques i have come across for different positions but it depends on what your welding, if it needs to be tested or not and if you feel willing risking a ****ty weld on a new technique or go with something proven.

depends i guess,

but, starting to get used to it, need lots more practice

Very cool pics. I like the weld weld profile.

Where is the vertical up? :)
