I am eagerly awaiting delivery of my plasma cutter. As with most of my projects, I have been visualizing the use of the cutter and have some questions.

Is the plasma tip recessed inside the cup? In other words, can the cup be dragged on the surface and against a guide?

I know the cut will have a kerf; is it constant or will it vary based on material being cut? I want to make sure my computer generated stencils are accurate.

Has anyone modded a cup to provide standoffs to assist with controlling the surface to tip distance (if needed)?

TIA, Lee

Which model plasma cutter did you buy?
Simon does have some standoff for sale and I believe they come standard with the 80 and 100 amp models.

If you look in the posts here I think you'll find and answer to tip design. For most part you keep the tip off the surface of the piece. I always maintain the distance of about two sheets of paper. Yeah its hard to judge but once you get used to the torch it becomes easier. I used a rolling standoff on my Hypertherm unless I am using a guide.

I just recieved the 40 amp model this past wekend . Oddly enough most of my prior experience was watching videos of cuts being made. You will be suprized at how quick you pick up on cutting.

I think I have seen every video of every brand that exists on YouTube. Even the CNC tables. :dizzy:
