Hello all,
I am new to the site and relatively new to welding as well. I currently own two welders. One is a Lincoln Electric Pro Mig 140 and the other is a Chicago electric 90 Amp Mig.
I do a good amount of work to older cars like my current project which is a 1978 Chevy Camaro.
I am currently switching the car from a Automatic to a Manual transmission setup with a extra / add-a-pedal kit. I had to cut out a square in the floor for a hole saw to be used for the shifter (Or at least to make it look right).
So, now I need to weld in the square hole (Patch) panel. Upon trying to do this I encountered a problem. My welder was burning through the floor pan of the car.
The floor pan of the car is a 22 gauge metal as well as the metal I was currently using to make my patch panel. I set my smaller welder (Chicago Electric) to the lowest amps and fastest speed (As recommended by the book). So more details I was also using .30 Wire WITHOUT Gas.
Now, my Lincoln has the gas / gas less option for use.
Now my questions:
1. Should I really be using the gas with a 0.25 wire? Will this still burn through?
2. Also, I was told that you really couldn't use a butt joint for 22 gauge metal either that is was to thin and needed to be over lapped. Is this true?
Thanks,
Tyler
