i have been welding for a little while now and my boss has me welding on farm equipment 99% of the time. my ? is why does he have me welding with 6010 and then having me weld 7018 on top of the 6010? everytime i ask him he just smiles and says quit asking ?'s

7018 can take alot more elongation before failing, 6010/6011 are more brittle but its good for burning through the crud and getting good penetration first
at least thats what i think :)

Yes,
6010 is good for burning through mostly anything and getting good penetration. Once the crud is burned away, it make sense to put a stronger, more flexible 7018 on it. Plus, I bet you it looks better.

My entire business is based around equipment repair. I run a 7018 all the way out. gouge it out and weld it up. It's stronger, and I don't tend to weld thru anything. I clean it "V" it out and weld it up. However if he is the boss then you do it like he wants it done. Doesn't matter what you think or I tell ya.

yes sir, he is
thanks for all your reponses.
i was taught at my welding school to v out and use 7018 i am still very green but i love welding and learning different methods.
the funny thing is the way i being told to do it is fast and i have not any of my welds break yet.
i think if we were paid by the hour i would be able to do it my way but we are paid by the job and i have little experince and my boss has over 40 years (navy and pipe) so i will do what he says
thanks again

ive been working on vvertical up . started with stringers on plate and as advised here am doing v preps and fillets now. have learned to get a keyhole and a bead on the back side. it is necessary to grind out the black slag from the 6011 ( i seem to run that better on ac than i do the 6010 on dc) before hot pass . i have played with a 7018 root and am able to weave it from bevel to bevel and get penetertration, i can see a keyhole at each land just before i cross over... this bead needs no grinding as the slag falls/brushes off unlike 6010-11. so i have been wondering why bother with the 6010, and now i learn that a pro like hammack goes 7018 all the way out. which stops all the wondering...i love it here....
