I am fixing to finish welding school and I have the opportunity to go to Houston and weld on shut down jobs. Right now I am working at an air conditioning company, and "most" of the people I have talked to have told me to go, but some have told me not to go because of the economy.

Shut downs are normally short term. You could wind up stuck there and out of work. I'm in texas and right now I wouldn't recommend quitting a steady job.
