I am considering replacing my current Continental Y112 engine with a 22R Toyota engine I have unused in my shop. I am seeking any hints or insight others might have in how to manage Governor control on the replacement engine. The Y112 governor could be made to work, but:
1. Is it worth the effort.
2. Would I be better off to rebuild the Y112?
3. What "governor Kits" or electronic governors would veterans recommend?
4. Would I really need a governor with the 22R (does have vacuum advance??)?
Could anyone who has been involved in something like this share their thoughts?
( The Y112 is a 4cyl Flat head engine common in Lincoln Welders and the 22R is a 4Cyl Standard Engine common in late model Toyota Light PUs.)
Let me have it, I could really use some feedback.

You would need a belt driven varable speed governor, see the link below. There is also an electronic governor on this site you maybe able to use

You could try a cruise control unit, put a speed sensor on the flywheel. I don't think this would work very well !!!!!!!!!!!! More than likely you will have way to much droop, and every time you use it, you would have to reset the rpm. I don't think it would be a good idea. I think it would cause a whole lot of other problems.

I suggest you contact a company Weldmart On line at weldmart.com
you can call them at 281-432-0250 and ask for Larry. Larry is the most knowledgable person I have ever met on those type of engines and sa200 type of welders. The company he works for has developed new engines and much new hardware for those continental blocks. Give him a call and bet he has what ya might need, I have been very happy with his support and what I bought from them.

I have a feeling that Temponly moved on, but did Lincoln use a Y112 in welders?

I know Lincoln used Continental engines way back and the guys at Weldmart rebuild them, not sure of exact model anymore. I was amazed at what they provided at Weldmart from newly designed starters, new distributor kits and lots of modernizing stuff to make it reliable. If you're a pipliner, they are a good company to get to know.

As far as using the 22R. It would make a dandy I'd think. First easily adaptable belt drive mechanical governor I thought of would be from a walk behind Gravely Tractor. http://www.gravelyparts.com/catalog32.cfm?catalog=24
