Hi guys. Sorry to hit you with a newbie question: I've had a surf around the forum and can't find this question answered already, so here goes.

I have a SIP Migmate Turbo 105 unit which is just fine for my meagre needs. I've had it for years for odd jobs here and there.

One reason I don't use it more has been the cost of the gas bottles.

For this reason, I've recently bought some gassless wire with the appropriate tip etc.

I've learned though that the change is not quite this simple as fluxed wire welding should be carried out with the torch negative whereas my rig is obviously(?!) torch positive.

Alas my Sip rig does not have the dual function and I can't afford to buy a new rig.

I'm considering just swapping the outputs over inside the welder using either a great big 120 amp switch pair or just permanently swapping the tip and clamp wires inside the unit.

Can anyone provide positive or negative comments on this approach, or even how important the polarity is.

Thanks in advance,

Toby.

turbotas, welcome to the forum!!! I'm not familiar with that machine so I don't know how the leads are hooked up inside or how hard the change over would be, but change it you must. Flux-core wire MUST be positive ground. Good luck and enjoy your stay here. Lotta good people here with ALL the answers. Tim

Hi Tim,

Many thanks for your swift reply. Much appreciated. The internal layout is not ideal for swapping the polarity, but I reckon it can be done. I may have to use some high amperage cable: I'm going to look for high rated breakers so I chan change it back easily for solid wire. I'll post my success/failure story!

Most elegant would be a rated contactor and a small panel switch. Tightwad that I am, I would opt for a pair of panel jacks like found on a buzz box mounted through the case at a convenient location, a pair of cable plugs and manually switch the cables when needed.
