Aha! A motor-generator set. Rather than stepping-down AC and rectifying it, an AC motor runs a DC generator. The inertia of the rotating mass of the motor helps smooth out loads on the generator. They're beautiful, smooth machines....if you have three phase power. I haven't seen a single phase one, myself.

I worked with one...squeezed into a little welding booth and my only complaint is that noise these darn thing make.
