Hello
I have been a structural steel welder/aluminum fabricator (Bar joist decking ETC) for 12 years I can tig weld aluminum very fine and overhead stick weld 7018 also with little difficulty But I have never been certified was trained by my father and have only work in this industry for him Its time for a change and I am looking for a pipe fitters job.
where can i get certified and take a 6G test in the Dallas Texas area
Thanks for your help I realy need it.
Needless to say my father does not agree with my decision and has pretty much disowned me so practicing at the shop is out of the question.
Its time for me to move on been under his wing my hole life.

First of all, don’t burn any bridges with Pops, you will regret it later. He may have or had great expectations of you that you may or may not have fulfilled, such as to follow in his footsteps, take over the family business or be a better man than he.
Ask him were he thinks the company is going and what his goals are and how you fit in. Listen very carefully to what he says and think on it a few days before you set him down:drinkup: and tell him how you feel, your ideas and goals. I don’t know what your family structure is and I don’t claim to be a psychologist, I’m just a business owner / father that has raised two boys (21 & 25).:waving:

Anthony E R.Honestly,I assume your probably in your late twenties or early thirties it is definitely time to spread your wings. I don't know your whole situation with your father but him cutting you off isn't fair and rather selfish. Your best bet is to research apprentice programs outside of Texas and try to get into some sort of fitters union. If you have the experience you say it shouldn't be hard.

In hindsight many times we wish we wouldn't have burn'd the bridges we have. Mistakes are learning tools though, in time your relationship with your father will not balance on anything but love and respect from both of you. Communication and honesty and humility only benefit the situation no matter what steps are taken. Your Pops has been there and so have many of us on both sides of our own issues. And with your experience and 'sticktoitiveness' sounds like you'd be useful on most any project.
BTW have you tried welding in circles all day? You may find that a little fresh air (on the right-of-way) will do all the good, in many ways!
Tried college classes?
I'm sure pops wouldn't hate you if you took a temporary vacation from your duties for a season no matter what you decide.

Is there a possibility of moving up and not out. If I had a shop I would want my son to take over the business someday. I wouldn't want my son out in the shop welding all day. He would need to spend some time in the office, talking to suppliers, ordering materials, doing that sort of thing.
I don't know if you are already doing that or not. If not, that would be the next logical move I would think.

There is a welding school in Garland, Texas. I believe the name is Garland school of welding. Try that out on a google search. You will find many options
