Hello all!
You are looking at the newest business owner in my area.
I just got the conformation, but am still waiting for the license and permits to arrive in the mail.
D&D Welding and Fabrication is the name of my new company!
I had been previously just doing the internet sales thing, that didn't require me to have a license or any special permit, but now I can bill myself locally to do general welding and fabricating as well as sales!
Thanks!
Ken.

Congrats.
It brings back memories of when I cut the cord (not in welding). The JOY, fear you name it. It's adrenalin.
Have fun.

I know what you mean RancherBill!
My marketing strategy is to advertise locally in the paper now, but I have an add coming out in mid October in our yellow book that will cover the whole of the north east corner of Indiana, and the sales rep for yellow book said that I was the only one advertising 24/7 emergency mobile welding services in the area, that kind of scares me a little, I am concerned that I might get overwhelmed and not be able to handle all the calls that might come through, I have a knot in the pit of my stomach right now just thinking about it!

That is absolutely the best thing that can happen to you.
Supply and demand - that's what controls prices.

I know your right MM, but its still nerve wracking just thinking about it.
I am not quite set up like I would like to be, and will have to get creative until I can afford more tools, but I think I can cover the basics with what I have, but I need to get a spool gun here pretty quick! :)

Best of luck Ken, I just hope that if the bank and your other creditors from your past call you and ask for something to be done, and you do it for free. After all, you still owe them, and you can just write it off as a loss, according to some people it is just as good as money in the bank .
Once again best of luck.

Very cool Ken. I'm in the process of a similar project, only on the manufacturing side. Scary isn't quite the word for it. Best of luck to ya.

Thanks everyone.
And that goes for you to h2oboy, things got out of hand on the other thread, I was having one of those weeks where nothing was going right, and I let others get to me!
I apologize for my own indiscretions!
I hold no ill will against anyone for their feelings and beliefs, nothing I could say would make any difference anyway, so I will let it go at that!
Thanks Mark!
I have been doing the ,manufacturing side for the last couple of years, making/fabricating stuff for sale.
It was going great until the economy went bust, and now its just a trickle of what it was before!
Good luck on your own venture!
Thanks Steve!
I will be sending a PM before too long!
smawgmaw!
I have an old Ben Pearson mig, not sure if I can make a spool gun work on it, but if I can, it would make for a good one to use one on, I might have to get a suitcase to use one on or I could just get a wire feeder of some kind and use it on my engine drive, I think it would be a pain to do it that way though!
I am doing some research to see what all my options are right now, it has been years since the last time I used one, and it wasn't set up on an engine drive, so if anyone has any suggestions, I am open to them, any and all, you might be able to give me some ideas that I have not thought of or looked into yet!
Thanks again!
Ken.

I like Joe Martin of Sherline and his attitude about self employment

What's the worst that can happen? You end up right back where you were, working for someone else.

Careful of the obvious trap. Have a think before the calls start coming through about the areas you will service. There is no point chasing your tail all over the state - that's how accidents happen.
Maybe see if you can find some other guys you can farm work out to? Even if you had just a couple of guys in the far flung spots you could sub work out to. So you get the leads and send them to your guys. They do the work, and you invoice the client. You collect the money and keep 10% or so yourself before paying your guy. Make sure they have their own insurance etc.
There are plenty of people out there with the welding skills but not the business skills.
