pancake shield holding up

I was working on my welding trailer yesterday and had to make a run to town and forgot my pancake shield was on the bed of the truck :eek: I saw it fly out the back and skip on the highway and go in the ditch. I thought it was done for but upon retrieving it the only thing wrong was the lenses were broke, the clip that holds the lenses in was gone, and it had one small chip. Im amazed it survived being thrown at 45 mph and skipping on asphalt. I called wendys pancake hoods and ordered the clip for only a dollar plus a dollar shipping! So if anybody is considering a pancake hood but wondering if theyll hold up I can vouch for them:laugh: I'll post a pic of it later today :drinkup:

I have a Wendy and like it very much. I also have a white pipe liner and I like it very much too. It is hard for me to say which one I like the most. I have three or four Jacksons that I liked very much until I bought the other two. I have never tried the Auto Dark.

I also meant to say I kept buying helmets thinking if I got a better one it would improve my welding. I found out the hood has very little to do with it. :laugh:

Like all autodarking helmets they don't work in cold weather 20 deg or lower they are NOT recomended.

its lighter and gets rid of all outside light so its like wearing sunglasses. Its also much cooler outside when the suns on you and I enjoy feeling the breeze around my face when working outside.

I bought mine from www.wendyspancakes.net Mine cost around $60 shipped to my house. Theres a few companies that make pancake hoods but ive found that wendys is the lowest priced ones. You can order ones made to take an auto darkening lens but mine is a standard shade lens cause I started getting too dependent on that auto dark. Theyll spoil ya :jester:

Craig, they sell them where I buy my stuff.

I was curious, and asked them.............What In The Blue Blazes are these things. Looks like the Iraq welding helmet.

Dude told me there's right , and left, hand models. Depending on what side of your bod you like to weld on. The eyepiece(goggle area) is sanded down, by you , to fit your face, and it blocks all back light that you would have with a regular hood.

It sounds like a pretty cool thing

For what it's worth, I've used my Jackson auto dark @ 4deg. F. with no problems.;)

Yep they probably look funny to most, but did you see big smile on that pipe liners (who in fact use pancakes 'almost' exclusively) face when he or she deposits their check at the end of the week! Cool pic of the old school, notice the one-handed welding while holding the shield, 'good to practice' cause in some positions you won't have room for both hands to weld.

I use the pancake hood....started with sarge's and now i like the wendy's.. wendys' is heavier, but i like it. both have their probs....but nothing gorilla glue can't fix.
(apply at all corners and seams it will help the life of the hood)
I use a huntsman solera shade 10/11 automatic lens....for right now. i dont like it at all but iam going to wear it out before i buy another.

the brown one is the sarge's
and the wendy's is the white one
