There are many kinds of protractors to find angles, what is the best? i saw a magnet one but i could move it 1/2" and not get a change in reading. i need something very accurate. and easy to mark that angle. my table saw cuts angles but it seems to have some slop too and i need a tight fit

There a quite a few engineering type protractors available. Fairly precise in measure.

I have i couple. One is easier to use than the other.

I think it is made by a company called General.

Will have a look and post back.

Will post pics when i install software to resize them.

thanks, ive looked at box stores and seen only the compass like one which is easy to use but not accurate. i have a $1 walmart one for kids school thats accurate but not easy to use. ive seen a kind on google that is v shaped, one lays horizontal on 0 axis and the other finds the angle. it has a gauge looks very accurate and when you hit your angle you could just take a marker and swipe it down the upper ruler and your done. wish i could find one like that.

I found pics on their web site
http://www.generaltools.com/Departments/Hand-Tools/Measuring-Tools/Protractors.aspx

It is also an online store so you can puchase direct

I have the combo set which does angles, finds center to circle and square, but the one i pick up the most is the square head steel protractor which has 2 deg. increments.

I've always used a carpenter's sliding T-bevel. Get out the compass if the angle needs to be divided.

This is great for setting saw, but is limited to angles in the vertical orientation http://www.google.com/products?q=Wixey+digital+angle+gauge&scoring=p

I just bought a Harbor Freight tool identical to Part #: MG-S278-4R shown on that site- cost me $7. Might not be as well made as that $200 one shown though. But I might hesitate using the $200 one for a prybar like I might do with the HF model.

Go to www.tricktools.com
I have the oil filled angle level and the wixey digital unit. Both are very accurate.

I have a General square head protractor that I use on my metal lathe and it works great. My compound only goes down to 30 degrees, so I use the protractor for angles under 30 and they come out accurate.

I use a protractor and a couple straight edges with a pivot bolt and a slotted bolt.. or bolt it to the square or table it's very universal, homemade and very accurate if assembled properly.... works the best on the bench for repetitive cuts.... my 2 cents

I have one of these and it works very well. The calibration procedure is a little different from what the instructions say, but no big deal. However, they have introduced a better model which is not shown on their website (and I don't know the number). The new one has a 'hold' button, and has a couple of other features (I believe backlight and maybe auto shutoff).

This is my favorite. You have to watch not to drop it. Or the indicator gets a bit smashed up. I abuse this device though and it still works, over a year for me. That is good for my treatment of tools.

It only has two degree increments. But if you can see that good, you can just split the hairs and get any increment you want.

I have a "line of chords rule" to do some larger plate work angles, they are very compact and tough.
