I just started practicing for pipe certification and got into an argument with a buddy. I'm practicing on a butt weld set at a 45 degree angle ( I believe the term is 6G??? not real sure.) and I'm running my cap with 5/32 7018 ( until I can afford some 8010's) and I can't keep my weld from sagging. anyway my friend say's I have to run it downhill & I say uphill. Either way, how do I keep my puddle where I want it? Rowdy

5/32" is much to large. Yes run it up but use 1/8" or 3/32" 7018 stringers. 7018 run tight and right will deliver numbers in the 80k range strength wise.
uphill downhill who cares it will all shoot and meet the specs of the procedures there are different problems with both its either rod size heat or tecnique you will not get the desired result from that or any low hydrogen rod downhill whether 6g arkansasbellholesame same 7010 7018 same series rod same tensiles depends on the disipline you are to be working pipeline downhill chemical uphill practice practice it alll goes back to type size heat diameter of the pipe

i dissagree. never run 7018 down
run it up.
5/32 is tougher to control, but doable.
8010 run it down
youre saggin in the middle?
Move faster on the midle, focus on the sides, the middle will fix itself
good luck

Also,
7010 and 7018 are completely differnt rods. 6010, 7010, 8010 much more similar. Likewise 7018, 8018, 9018, 11018 very similar rods...but these two sets are nothing like the other
Over here in MI Say a 6" sch 80 pipe at 3 G position (horizonal)with a 3/32 or 1/8 gap between the pipes start with 6010 1/8 for the root pass then 1/8 7018 for the hot pass (2nd ) and 7018 1/8 for the cover pass (3rd) everything up hill and run DC reverse polarity. You will get the hang of it soon just practice, practice & more practice. On that 6G you might want to run stringers it will be alot easier for you

NEVER EVER EVER EVER RUN A 7018 DOWNHILL!!!! NEVER!!!!! look man obviously you have never cut open a weld that you have done with a grinder or saw and seen how much trash is in your weld after you welded downhill with a 7018. A 7018 is an uphill only rod, and a 6010 or a 8010 is an all position rod and depending on the thickness they are usually ran downhill but on thicker pipe it can sometimes be ran uphill to stack more metal and to spread the heat more.

ohh ya and dude if your practicing do it this way-3/32 5p+ stringer bead, 1/8 5p+ hot pass, 7018 (uphill!!!!) filler bead with 3/32!, then cap with 3/32 7018 and keep her clean and pretty the whole time!
