Hello iam new to this forum, I have recently been offered a hobart welder generator all I know is that it was bought in the late 90's and has options for tig/mig , from what the guy remembers it is about 2'wide and 4' long.it also has a kohler engine. what could it be?, apparently its being stored in the back of a container that is full of stuff so he can't easily get to it to get more specs, it hasnt been run in about 5 years

If it's his,he should know what it is,you're not really going to know until you actually see it,it's just speculation at this point.

If it's free you really can't lose. Since it's been sitting for 5 years, you'll probably need to go through the carb and clean out any gunk. If the container is rat-proof the wiring should still be ok.
Leroy, not having any additional info it's hard to say. My guess is it's a CC DC stick welder from the description. It may or may not have aux. AC power to run tools and such. If it does it's probably less than 4kw. At worst it's an AC only stick machine. With the age I doubt it is capable of CV for use with wire feeders or has any sort of remote capabilities. If a gas powered stick welder is of use to you than I'd say take it.
As said since it's been sitting for 5 years, assume it won't start because the carbs probably gunked up. Dump any remaining fuel, fill with clean gas and some carb cleaner and see if it will start. If it doesn't, I'd get the carb rebuilt and try again. For free you can't beat the price.
