Hobart titan 8 will not go to high idle when an arc is struck:cry:.The solenoid is getting 13 volts dc when the auto idle switch is on and 0 when off,but does not want to let go when an arc is struck.Should i assume the high idle /timer module is history?

Does anyone have a used hobart timer module part #493400 at a reasonable price?

Felon,

Yes, it could be the Idle Module but don't rule out the current transformer that senses weld and auxiliary power load. If I'm not mistaken you should get a couple volts output from T1 leads #2 and #4 at Idle Module terminals #2 and #4.

Will it come off high idle with an AC auxiliary power load?

If you don't have it, I can send you the Titan 8000 wiring diagram that I got from member MetalArchitect.

You can check with Larry Burross on a used/new module.

Member Mega Arc 5040DD is having idler problems with his unit as well and I believe they are the same module. He was informed it is no longer available but I haven't looked into with anyone to confirm that. If that's the case, a conversion to a current control system may be in order.

Felon,

I found this in a quick search.

Didn't check it all the way out though.

Duane the problem is it will not go to high speed when the arc is struck ?when the engine starts the idle solinoid plunger pulls in to hold idle speed but will not release to let engine rev to high speed? At this point there is no voltage at the solinoid when i switch to auto idle there is 13 volts at the solinoid but it will not release when an arc is struck??

No idle up on striking an arc is understood. I asked if it will release low idle if there was a load on the auxiliary AC power to see if any of the idle control cicuitry - in particular the current transformer T1 - was working or if the entire system was inoperable.

In case you aren't sure, the T1 current transformer is shown below.

Weld output = Red arrow / Aux. AC output = Green arrow / Transformer output to Idle Module = Yellow arrow.

Well duane
it was the idle module.i decided to do a quick fix rather than lay out 150 to get it rebuilt(seeing as this welder is my back up generator and wont be leaving the shed anywho)
thanks for the help.
Felon
yes i have been in hiding

I missed this post Felon. Thanks for the update. If I run across a module I'll let you know.

What kind of gas consumption do you guys get with your Titans? I've had mine for a couple years now and have used it for welding and light generator uses.

With the East coast storm that just hit I started her up to generate power for our refrigerator and she went through a whole tank full of gas (i think about 4 gallons) in a little over an hour

Any suggestions for better fuel economy...gas is now hard to come by in the New York Tri-state area
