Just wondering..I was bored, with the tig machine, tried welding 2 pennies together in a lap joint...Very low amps.A small puddle formed on the bottom one and the top one just burned away

What kind of heat sink is the bottom one laying on? One is getting hotter than the other. Guess which one:).

Most of the pennies out there are copper coated zinc. Zinc has a pretty low melting point. Scrape one with a knife hold it to a flap wheel/grinder, it'll be silvery under the copper.

Yeah to have any luck you'd probably have to look for some older pennies. I forget exactly when they changed over to the zinc cored/copper coated ones, but I think it was in the mid70's at some point. Definately by the early 80's.

Last year for a copper penny was 82, but that was also the first year the zinc one was introduced. Hehe I used to remember using a pair of scissors to cut them in half and mess with people having them try cutting the same year penny but the copper one....

Not two coins but one.

Mate brought his van key around the other day, stealers wanted 275GBP to cut a new one:realmad::realmad:

So I brazed a Two pence (British Coin) to the shaft.

You can weld the new pennies together using 4043 aluminum as filler.. it bonds well with the zinc if you don't overheat it.. I just tried it a few mins ago. Tig, DC- low low amps..
