I bought a used 190c and it seems the pilot arc isn't working. If I pull the trigger (compressor will start) and scratch the nozzle on the plate it will arc and sputter, and then a couple more taps and it will go into full plasma cut mode. If I install the drag cut consumables it will not arc or light as expected with no pilot. Any suggestion on what to try Jim? I kind of under stand the blow back pilot design, but could it be a bad board? Other then the no pilot arc it works great, but the scratching is eating consumables like candy.

Sound like you either need new consumables (nozzle and / or electrode) or the swirl ring is damaged or the torch retaining cap is overtightened.

Do you have the manual? If you don't, you can download it at www.hypertherm.com, click on the download library tab and follow the directions. The manual will take you through trouble shooting this issue.

The electrode inside the torch has to slide freely. If it is stuck (an overtightened retaining cap can do this) it will stay in contact with the nozzle and cause the exact symptoms you describe.

Thank you Jim, you are spot on.
I replaced the swirl ring, and lightly tightened the torch head. It started a pilot arc no problem, and cuts like a dream. Thanks for your help I had replaced everything but the swirl ring up till then.
