Has or is anyone using a 3m speedglas welding helmet? And would you recommend it?

I used a friends speedglas, it was very comfortable. Best of all, my eyes didn't itch after hours of on and off welding. It is a great helmet, but expensive.

I have a speedglas at work in a welding / fab shop. everyday is something different. some days I fab handrails double tacking each end of each picket hundreds of pickets....800 taks?...never been flashed. Some days I weld all day and my eyes are fine at the end of the day . It has been dropped many times. Just recently we were installing a gate and a sudden downpour hit-so we threw everything under a tarp-that had a hole in it,needless to say my shield ended up full of water.I let it dry out ....still works. I also have a Speedglas utility series at home-just as good ,but not variable.-Zeb

Ashley,
Speedglas is top of the line. I used mine for several years then passed it on to my son who used it in his welding class. Still kicking and does not miss a beat. If you have the budget for it I am sure he will be pleased.

Just get a Speedglas 9100XX and be done with it!

I agree with LarryO on this one, Speedglas 9100xx is the best. If you want to get a quality helmet and not have to worry about needing to upgrade in the future, that is THE helmet to buy. My wife convinced me to just buy the 9100xx so I would not be lusting after a better helmet later on, she was right.

Your link didn't work. In any case, stay with a quality name brand (Jackson, Miller, Speedglas, Huntsman, Optrel) and you won't be disappointed.

I don't understand why everyone cries about them costing so much. A pro racer doesn't buy the cheapest helmet they can, and a Infantryman doesn't buy the cheapest boots he can get. If several hundred is too much for you, buy a used one like I did. I found a used 9002v for $125. I'd much rather have a high quality used item than a lesser quality new item.

Sounds very similiar to the advice my wife was given several years ago...
She (VERY thoughtfully) "Upgraded" my welding helmet to a Hornell Speedglas 9000X in December of '02... Since then, I have bought a 3m Speedglas 9002X in '07 as a "Backup" for when my older helmet gives up the ghost, but that isn't gonna happen anytime soon...
The 9000X has thousands of hours on it, and is just as strong as when it was new.
The 9002X is still sitting in a box waiting to be called to service... I let friends use it for demos... My little girl has claimed it as "Her Helmet" and wants to paint it PINK.
And I FINALLY talked the company I work for into buying me a helmet with PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) so I am demo-ing this puppy for a week to decide if I want one...

Hands Down, this is the nicest helmet I have ever used OR seen...
It's a little heavy, but once I had it on, I forgot about the weight.... Had it on for over 7 hours straight today and LOVE it.
Oh... Can you tell I am a fan of 3M/Speedglas Helmets?
Spend the money if you can afford it... You WON'T be disappointed.

I like my Miller digital elite X lens, it fits perfectly into my Jackson shadow shell that i've had forever.
I feel the same way about my safety equipment.
I don't mind spending the money because I use it 60+ hrs a week, and I'm not trusting my eyes/hands/etc to anything that isn't tried and true.
