your local voc highschool or c.c. usually offer classes (pretty cheap too) and for the type of work you want to do is a mig, i would go with a 110v mig around 500.00 brand new, these machines are usually used in body shops,

taking a class is money well spent, you can also check out local craft schools any of these options are a good idea,you can use machines that you might not me able to afford quite yet..

books are also a great resourse,

anybody can pick up a mig gun and start to weld,just like most cheezY mechanics do
