The easiest way to make an avatar is to use a graphic that's already in your computer. I've isolated an element that I want in part of a photo by using the cropping tool of the Microsoft photo-editing tool that comes packaged with the computer.
So if you use a digital camera, you can take a picture of something you want, size it small and then import it as an Avatar.
Caution: the photo needs to be SMALL. Otherwise it will take up too much memory and be rejected by the software that runs this forum.
To import the Avatar, I've found that the instructions in your User Control Panel (User CP link at the top left of this page) are pretty straight-forward -- moreso than my directions would be. It's just important to know, when you click the "Import Avatar" button, where the retouched photo that you want to use is stored on your hard drive.
Does that help at all?

For my photo work, including sizing them for avatars, I use Irfanview. This is a free program from www.irfanview.com It works great! Irfanview will view pretty much any graphic format there is. You can resize the pics, change the "sample" rate (resolution). For pics to post on a forum, or to email, use 72 or 75 for your resolution. Each forum will tell you what size you picture is allowed to be, and you can easily size your avatar pics to whatever size you need.
My attatchments will show the size of the original pic, and the downsized pic for an avatar.
