Quick question. How do you sever cut? Is it with regular tips moving slowly. Or is it with gouging tips

When you see a "severance cut" rating, it means that that is the most the machine will cut, it's will be a poor, slower cut, but it will get the job done.
You'll want to use the regular tips instead of the gouging tips. It's been my experience the last few years that when Hypertherm rates a machine, it will always do more than what they say the maximum thickness rating is.

These are some pics of a PM45 severance cut. http://weldingweb.com/showthread.php?t=30407
They are done with a normal cutting tip. Severance is anything greater than a machines rated cut thickness, although a PM 45 will out cut and out sever it rated capacity.
