I dont post much. I read the forum about once a month. A friend has one of these and has no idea what it is. His initial description was that you could hook it up to a car battery and weld with it. I was not interested at first. He finally pulled it out to show me. I got the ser # and downloaded a manual. Built in 1997.
I am interested now. Its what I think of as Millers version of a LN 25. I can hook that thing up to my bobcat and mig with it.
I will go get the thing and flop it up on my bench and clean it up and start seeing what I need to run flux cored wire with it. That ought to come in handy for a few welding projects around the place.
I have been debating/ pro and conning about a 110V Lincoln mig machine at home depot. I am done with that debate.
I am figuring i should still be able to get parts for this thing.
I am assuming it needs a new wire liner since its been setting up a long time and also the correct drive rolls that match the wire I plan to run.
My wife says its a new toy. I happily resemble that remark.

Anyone have much experience with these things? What do I need to watch out for?

Yeah, it's Miller's voltage sensing wire feeder, similar in operation to the LN 25.

All you need is a CV power source, the leads connect like you are stick welding, only the pos lead goes to the feeder, There is a little clip lead that has to connect to the work to create a circuit to operate the drive motor.

Your manual will cover operation details.

They are a great feeder. You won't have a contactor to shut the weld current on & off, but it will work nicely for what you want to use it for.

Get the VK knurled drive rolls from Miller in whatever size wire you intend to run, for fluxcore. The knurling feeds the wire without slipping, without having to crank down the roller tension. Too much roller tension deforms the soft wire making it not want to feed out the tip.

If using fluxcore self shield, hook up the leads with the negative going to the feeder and positive going to the work.

As far as liner or tip advice, since I don't know what torch it has on it, can't help much. These feeders originally sold without a torch and you had to buy your own choice of torch seperately. The Miller Roughneck and Iron Mate torches were popular for the older Suitcase feeders before Miller started including Bernard Q300 guns with the newer models around 2006-ish. I'm sure many folks bought Tweco torches for the older ones as well.

Whatever torch it is, use the right size liner for the wire size and it should feed good. Using too large dia liner with too small a wire contributes to the wire 'snaking' inside the liner and erratic feed speed at the tip.

If you convert the gun to use Bernard Centerfire tips and nozzles, you can use their DS-1 gas diffuser and NS-FLX fluxcore tip holder with Centerfire tip and that combination works excellent for self shield fluxcore wire. Go to www.bernardwelds.com to check on availability of the Centerfire conversion kit for your torch.

Thanks,
I will get my hands on it in the next week or so. The idea is for me to get it up and running and to share it. We both will have uses for it.
Correction. It was built in 92 not 97 according to the manual.
