I was just looking through a lot of posts, and a lot of the guys on this site are jus beginning to weld, (like me) and what i think would be really good, is to have a section where the people who are really familiar with different styles of welding could submit tutorials on how to get different ef-x on different types of welds, and show the effect that different angleing of a torch, stick etc., has on different types of metals and such.
Or even if the more experienced welders on this forum could make threads on different ways of welding with the different machines, and how they do it and what works for them, to let us noobs (like myself) understand it a bit more.
This is just a suggestion, but i think it would be a really good idea. let me know what you think?????
Cheers,
Shane

Hey, I am with you...I wish there were more sites like Gordon's. The real hard part of doing these videos is making them where you can see the puddle. With so much light, a regular camcorder is not a good first choice. There are some folks that sell videos, and they are supposed to be pretty good...but they are done by professional video folk. And they cost $$$.

yea thats true aye, i would love to just sit down and watch videos on welding, and different types of welding, but as you said before smithy, the quality isnt that good, and you cant see the puddle form, there is ways around it, like my dad has recently been doing a welding course, and he is very very good with photography, and i asked him if it was possible to take a 10 or so second shot of me doing some welding, and then blend it into one picture, so you would be able to compare the 1st puddle to the 2nd puddle to the 3rd and so on. So it is possible, although he has a very expensive camera, but i will try and see if i can get it happening. because i think it will be good to have a shot of someone welding, and that way u can correct techniques and faults in the welding process. thats just my thought, do you know of any other sites that have welding videos, for free download, cheers smithy.

This may sound crazy. Has anyone ever tried making a video of arc and puddle thru a hood w/ 4" square lens? I don't have a video cam or I'd try it myself.

After welding for a while most welders can make a strong weld. Might look terrible but strong non the less. Here are a few tips for making your welds look professional.Uniformity is the key. Everthing must be kept the same as you weld. Everthing being- arc length, torch angle, travel speed, amount of filler rod if you are using tig, any weaving motion of the torch. A high level of concentration without a death grip on the torch or the filler rod is a must.

www.technicalvideorental.com has a selection you can rent for a descent price. I have rented several and had no problems with the service.
DO NOT rent the tig video it is abysmal...

These were done with a large lens and a digital camera set on "movie". That's why they are only 15 seconds long.

I'd like to make some higher quality but haven't decided to take a chance on ruining a better camera.

Gerald,
I have yet to see any site put together by a single person that does any better than yours...and, I have looked. My hat's still off to you.

Here's a little idea... although a bit iffy. How about we set up a little members resource area where those who have already rented can trade their Dvds with other members? At $9.99 a pop things add up really quickly. I'm about to rent 4 dvds and wouldn't mind sending out copies to anyone that wants them. Perhaps if a few members pooled together we could amass a good collection. I want to see all the videos from "painting cars" to "fiberglass working" but of course I don't want to pay $500 to see them all.
What do you think? Bad idea?

I know about all that....:nono:
Its the same deal as sharing rented movies with your friends/family. We're not making any monetary gain from it just distributing our resources. Bad idea ...I know.. I know... but if anyone wants to "borrow" my rented movies just let me know.
hey yellow will you still do this for people? I want a specific video "Making Gears the easy way". I would rent it myself but they only ship to the USA and that other place up there (j/k). What if I put down your address to sent it to, I pay for it and you image the DVD and send it to me via the internet?

You can also do a search on YouTube.com for welding. There are a number of "how to" videos that have been made with the beginning welder in mind.

try downloading welding videos from a bit torrent client like torrentspy, etc.
I have d/l 'd some videos for my students to watch (ie): TIG welding basics, Modern Marvels-Welding, etc.
They're free and informative!
