Hi everyone. I've been lurking here for a couple months and figured it was time to join. i'm a 30 year old computer network administrator in the process of building a small garage/shop to build and store my hot rods in. I've been into them since my father started building a 28 ford roadster when I was 10. by 12 I had started gathering parts for my own car and after a couple summers of work had enough money saved up to buy a 32 ford body and frame. At the time most of my work was done at my uncles or fathers garage with their tools. My father had a 110v lincoln mig and my uncle had a daytona(I think ??) 220v mig. that we used to build most things.

I took about ten years off from hot rods to go racing (mini-sprints and midgets) then college and a wife/house/family to top things off. I don't know how but I managed to keep the 32 project and build a 28x24 garage to continue working on it. The 28 roadster has now been relegated to my care as well. now that I have a place to work on it (my electrical should be done next week!) I am slowly building up my tool collection (much to my wife's dismay!)

I've been pretty successful welding with the simple mig welders. I've mostly been self taught and have even managed to build a few frames with the 110v mig with proper cleaning and joint prep. When I got involved in racing all of my frames were built out of 4130 so I couldn't do any repair work with the mig. all of this work was farmed out to a local welder and his tig. I decided since I have access to a couple portable migs and a larger mig already I would like to add that ability to my shop.

I did a bit of reading online and talked to the welder here at the aerospace shop I work for. He had me go look at Jody's site welding tips and tricks. Jody had trained him for his aerospace requirements. Jody had some nice things to say about the everlast welders on his site (although with reservations). I was interested and the Welder here thought it was more than capable of the type and amount of welding i would ask of it. 99% of my welding will be steel less than 3/16. I ended up going with an everlast 225lx

My tig experience is nill so I hope you guys don't mind me soaking up as much as I can. I have read a bit about some issues with this forum and everlast users/employees. I hope to avoid some of the issues I've seen others have. The guy I work with is supposed to come over to help me out with some settings when I get the machine up and running. When that happens I will post some pics of his use of the equipment and what I am sure will be a pathetic attempt at my own! lol

Thanks
Kevin

thanks for the welcome!
here's some pics for those that were interested. the racing is a closed chapter. It's the kind of thing that you need rehab to get out of! all consuming! the hot rods are definately a different lifestyle that I can enjoy instead of feeling run by it!
