Can anyone tell me what exactly does the arc control dial on my welder do?

I’m unaware of an “Arc Control” what model do you have?

“Arc Force” that is on some models is some times referred to as “slope” on other brands, it is for stick welding mostly or Mig, it changes the way the arc feels, smoother or “Buttery” to the left hand of the scale to Coarser or “Biting” to the right, mid way is neutral. It changes the shape of the square wave and acts sort of like a fine tuning knob in operation.

thanks for the help friend.. :help:

Miller, Lincoln, & others, use the term "Dig" & here is their definition;
Dig - Also called Arc Control. Gives a power source variable additional amperage during low voltage (short arc length) conditions while welding. Helps avoid “sticking” Stick electrodes when a short arc length is used.

hope this helps you out....

Thanks ASE,
Yes, Dig is the correct reference, I’m not going to tell you how old the slope reference is, :eek:, might give away my age.

The official reference to the Arc Force control knob can be found on Page 14 of the Tig Manual or page 11 of the Mig Manual. Not sure which you have but the Tig manual explains it better in my opinion. I’d paste it up here but don’t want to encroach on any copyrights.

You are all aware that this discussion was started as a ruse, I hope.

No I think he’s right,
I don’t get a chance to use other brands much anymore, but was over at a buddy’s house and he has an old Cal-Van stick welder. The arc control dial is on the back, right under the stack of dimes button. seems to work best set at 12.

WeldingRay,

I think the "slope" which you referred to (and this thread) has turned into a slippery one.:)
